While in our program, residents are taught principles of freedom that they can carry with them throughout their lives. These principles are the resources that graduates lean on and turn to when times become difficult and when they are feeling challenged. Many potential applicants are hesitant to apply to our program because they wonder if our program is any different from the others they have tried. They often ask themselves, “will this actually work this time?”. We wanted to share with you an update our Founder and President, Nancy Alcorn, recently received from 1997 graduate, Lori. Lori has a Master’s Degree in Psychiatric Social Work, and she is currently living and working in California.

Dear Nancy,

You’ve been on my mind and I wanted to check in on how Mercy and you are doing with the quarantine? I’m working 5 days a week in the hospital signing patients on to hospice. We are being told in the next few weeks there will be a surge of Covid-19 patients and it is estimated we will be signing 30 patients per day on to hospice.

On Monday, I held the hand of a patient while he died so he would not be alone as families are not wanting to come to the hospital due to fear of exposure. The ones who are visiting can only stay for 15 minutes to say goodbye to their loved ones. These are crazy times, but I am grateful and feel so honored to be on the frontlines to be the hands and feet of Jesus to the hurting.

I know you are on the frontlines as well. If it wasn’t for Mercy, I truly believe I would not be here. When I walked through the doors of Mercy 24 years ago it was with the intention that if Mercy couldn’t help me, I would end my life. I ended up walking out of Mercy a completely different person. Jesus used Mercy Multiplied to set me free!

Recently I had the privilege of leading a dying patient to Christ. He was a professed agnostic. He didn’t realize how much Jesus loved him. He thought his life was a mistake. Until my time at Mercy, I didn’t realize how much Jesus loved me. I also thought my life was a mistake. However, you all consistently showed me the unconditional love of Jesus and because of that, my life was changed.

My patient died 2 days later but it is awesome to know he is in the presence of Jesus healed and whole.

Thank you for helping girls like me find freedom.
