God is big. He created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1) – big. He created the stars (Genesis 1:16) – big. He set us each apart and knew our name before we were in our mother’s womb (Jeremiah 1:5) – big.
I fully know and believe God is mighty and powerful enough to do all that. But when it comes to me and what He can do through me… Nope. No way. He won’t do something that big in my life.
We can easily get caught up in the “no, I can’t do that” or “that’s too big for me” mindset, when we should simply be saying “yes” to what God brings us.
I didn’t grow up in a Christian household, but I was told I could do anything and encouraged by my parents to pursue my dreams. But when my dreams shifted into a call to work in ministry, I doubted God’s ability to use me in that way.
I felt I was called to work in ministry, but hesitated with that “no, I can’t do that” mindset. I questioned… Why me? There’s tons of other people more qualified than me… There’s tons of other people who have had a personal relationship with Christ longer than me… There’s tons of other people that know the Bible way more than me.
By questioning my path, I was putting limits on myself and ultimately putting limits on God’s ability to use me. Once I got past the doubting voice in my head, I said “yes” to ministry.
That “yes” has changed the direction of my life. It changed me into a woman I didn’t know I could be. But if I hadn’t said yes, I wouldn’t have experienced all that God had for me. I would have limited myself and God.
We need to stop putting limits on a limitless God.
What areas of your life are you putting limits on? Maybe it’s your personal life. God’s blessed you with an amazing career, but you don’t think He can give you a spouse and children. Maybe it’s your career. God’s blessed you with a decent job, but you don’t think He can make you a leader.
It’s impossible to reach our God-given potential when we limit what God can do.
Psalm 147:4-11 says:
He determines the number of the stars
and calls them each by name.
Great is our Lord and mighty in power;
his understanding has no limit.
The Lord sustains the humble
but casts the wicked to the ground.
Sing to the Lord with grateful praise;
make music to our God on the harp.
He covers the sky with clouds;
he supplies the earth with rain
and makes grass grow on the hills.
He provides food for the cattle
and for the young ravens when they call.
His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse,
nor his delight in the legs of the warrior;
the Lord delights in those who fear him,
who put their hope in his unfailing love.
Specifically, in verse five it says, “Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.” We need to constantly remind ourselves that we serve a great God who has no limits.
If you’re struggling with putting limits on your life, here’s my encouragement for you:
1. Stay connected with Jesus at a personal level.
Stay connected with Jesus through prayer. Build your relationship, and you will get clarity on just how big God’s dreams are for you.
2. Say “yes” to what God brings you.
Don’t let fear hinder your ability to say “yes” to what God has in store for you! Take small steps of faith, and they will lead you to the big picture.
3. Fight doubt.
Doubt can easily creep in, but be ready to combat your doubt with the Truth of God’s Word. Stay planted in scripture, and His Truth will be stronger than doubt.
God is big. God is powerful. God is limitless. Will you say “yes”?
