Young women arrive every month to Mercy with a story that is painful and heavy to carry. They often come with a broken belief system about who they are and who God is to them. That belief system is held together by the many lies that play on repeat in their minds telling them that they are too broken for God to mend them.
Every day while at Mercy, they are pointed back to Jesus and His never-ending faithfulness to them in the midst of their storms. They are daily reminded that nothing is impossible with God. The author and finisher of their faith will not leave them or forsake them. The transformation happens steadily as they are taught biblical truths and shown genuine love and compassion.
One recent graduate is one of those transformations.
As she writes in the following testimony, she realizes now from her time at Mercy, that God’s grace is not something to earn or strive for but it is freely given and it leads us to lasting change.
“God has done so much in my heart while I have been at Mercy. He has really made me into someone who values truth.
In the past, lies were my struggle.
Telling them, living them, and believing them. I lived in a place of constant hiding and darkness even as a believer.
But He has uprooted the lies I believed and replaced them with His truth. As the lies have been uprooted, I stopped living them as often. He has been teaching me how to walk in the truth.
Another work God has done in my heart is teaching me about love and grace. Although I grew up in an amazing home, I somehow missed what true love and grace were based upon.
I tried to earn love and approval.
As I recited truth statements about His character and His love, I began to realize how much God loves me. Not on what I do, but who I am. He has been doing an ongoing work in me on what the power of grace is.
I lived in two extremes with grace; either earn it, or abuse it.
But in my time at Mercy I learned Romans 11:6 which says, grace cannot be based on works. So if it is truly salvation through grace my works cannot add or subtract to that.
I have also learned from Romans 2:4 that the kindness or grace of God is supposed to lead to repentance. God has been walking me through the road between these two ditches of “cheap grace.”
I thank God for changing me. Heart, mind, and soul.”
