With Thanksgiving being right around the corner, it’s only natural to begin thinking about some of the things I am thankful for.
So, I asked myself, what are the things that I’m thankful for? I immediately began thinking of all the BIG things that I’m thankful for. All the things that I could not live without.
I thought of how thankful I am that Jesus lived and died for me. I’m thankful that I live in a country where I can openly proclaim that and everything else that I believe. Thankful for family and friends and the people in my life who love and care for me. I’m thankful that God has a plan for me and that I have a destiny to walk out.
These are always the first things that I would say if I were to make a list of all that I’m thankful for. In comparison to these amazing things, everything else just falls short. Other things in my life just don’t seem that important.
Truthfully, my list often ends there because compared to Jesus, what else is there to be thankful for?
The Little Things
Even though every single one of those things that I listed is so important, it’s the subtle beauties and the small things that God gave us that I wanted to focus on. The beautiful things God gave us even though He didn’t have to.
Psalm 19:1 says (NIV), “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”
God could have created a bland world with just our basic necessities, but He didn’t. Even the smallest and most subtle of beauties declare the glory of God.
So, I wanted to pause and take a moment to be thankful for the small things. The things that I don’t notice each day or I don’t stop and appreciate in all the business of day-to-day life. A few things I thought of are…
The sunshine in the early morning
Tiny bubbles that rain makes when it hits the pavement
That talking to a loved one just takes a few taps on a screen
The power of music
That cozy, warm feeling of getting in bed and resting
The smell of a new book
Even the feeling of on warm socks that just came out of the dryer
God is in the Details
These are things that, in the grand scheme of it all, I could live without. They rank pretty low in importance when compared to some of the things I listed earlier. But I am so grateful for a God who gave us these things, even though He really didn’t have to. I am thankful for a God who loves us enough to make the little things in life enjoyable and who thought about us in every detail of life.
I want to encourage you to spend some time thinking about these small things in your life that you are thankful for. It may seem silly or even a little bit childish, but it’s the childlike wonder of the world that we should allow ourselves to tap into again.
