Father’s Day is set to be a celebration of our “superhero” dads, many of whom have truly been a supporter, a comforting friend, and a guiding example, pointing us to Jesus.
However, not all of us have amazing dads, and Father’s Day can be a painful day to endure for many.
Our hearts go out to those who have lost their father, those who have suffered abuse from their father, those who never met their dad, and those whose dads have never been there— prioritizing work, substances, or maybe something else. Whatever the case may be, we recognize that each one is surely unique in its difficulties.
So how do we handle Father’s Day if it just feels like another pierce to a deep wound?
One truth to remember for this day: we all have a perfect Father who will never fail us.
Because our earthly dads are human, they will fail in one way or another—some more than others. But the joyful truth is that we have a heavenly Father who won’t.
At times, we may see God like some fathers here on earth— harsh, angry, permissive, or distant, but this distorted view is a goal of the enemy. He tries to pervert everything good that God is— including the image of father. Yet, in reality, God assuredly is the perfect Father we all are looking for— we know that His love endures forever. He wants to heal you in your hurt, and He can handle anything and everything you bring to Him. Whatever your relationship is with your earthly father, this Father’s Day remember you have the perfect love of a heavenly Father.
Here are 6 truths and scriptures that speak to what it means for God to be our perfect Father:
God is our Father in heaven.

Matthew 23:9- And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven.
God is the potter, working to shape our lives.

Isaiah 64:8- But now, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand.
God is our creator.

Malachi 2:10- Have we not all one Father? Has not one God created us? Why then are we faithless to one another, profaning the covenant of our fathers?
God has given us kind love.

1 John 3:1- See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.
God is compassionate.

Psalm 103:13- The Lord is like a father to his children, tender and compassionate to those who fear him.
God is a Father to the fatherless.

Psalm 68:5- A Father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling.
What a great privilege we have to be invited into such an intimate relationship with God, who wants us to call Him Father. Rest in the fact that there are no orphans of God, and that your Heavenly Father has been there all along, making sure you find Him and come to know Him.
