All of us feel a bit anxious at times. We may be rattled by an upcoming performance, a big test, an important meeting, or even a difficult conversation. Whatever the source, it usually comes and goes. Then our nerves settle, and we move on.

Some of us are worriers. We focus on the worst possible outcome to any situation and find ourselves tied in knots fretting about things that may never happen. Or we find ourselves constantly worrying about our health, our children, the weather, or a million other things over which we have little or no control. We live in a constant cycle of worry, just waiting for the next bit of concerning news. It’s exhausting!

Anxiety can also become overwhelming, and without warning turn into full blown panic that makes it hard to think, speak, or even breathe. Repeated episodes are often a signal that outside help is needed to address the underlying issues driving panic attacks, which can make life difficult if not unmanageable.

Whether it’s nerves, worry, or full-blown panic, the Bible offers words we can turn to for instruction, comfort, and help. God does not want us to persist in cycles of debilitating fear and worry. He invites us to pour out everything in our hearts to Him and offers us the peace only He can give in return.

Consider memorizing one or more of the passages below. Personalize the verse and say it out loud to yourself when you are anxious.

  • Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)
  • Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:6-7 (NIV)
  • “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27 (NIV)
  • Cast your cares on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken. Psalm 55:22 (NIV)
  • Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9 (NIV)
  • Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT)
  • God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Psalm 46:1 (NIV)
  • A Song of Ascents. I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. Psalm 121:1-2 (ESV)
  • “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (NIV)
