God Created Us to Be in Community

God has a plan for you. God has a purpose for you. God also has people for you. Your people will have an influence on how His plan and His purpose will play out. Every part of the body of Christ is important. A mouth can’t do it all alone and neither can an ear. Often times I hear the words in worship songs claiming, “All I need is Jesus” and while it is sung out of a heart that means well, the Father has much more for us. It’s actually not biblical. He created us to be in community.

In the book of Genesis, we see that God formed Adam. He created him. Adam was living in a sinless world, he was in the presence of God, he walked with Him daily, and he lived with Him. Even while there was no sin in the world and Adam was in the presence of God, God called Adam alone. In Genesis 2:18 (ESV), He said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him. God created us to need each other, to be in community.

It makes me think to myself, if Adam was in the presence of God every day and God called him alone, how much more now is it important for us to be in community? Holy Spirit is always with us, but we are living in a sin filled world. We need to be in community. We need each other.

God created us to be able to pull destiny out of each other. Proverbs 13:20 (NRSV) says, Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools suffers harm. Proverbs 27:17 (LEB) says, As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. I read these, and I think to myself, “Show me your friends and I’ll show you your future.” Surround yourself with wise people, people that are doing things that you aspire to do, and people who love Jesus.

I look at my own life and I see the need for people. When I got saved I knew there were some unhealthy friendships I needed to cut out. I knew in my heart that I would suffer harm. For several months my only two friends were a 40 year old that had kids and a 60 year old that had grand kids. They mentored me and helped me walk out my new life. I needed them. After a few months God was faithful in bringing me my people who I knew I would run with. One of them is now my husband.

For me, I knew my people by their sense of humor. It sounds silly, but when I was newly saved every Christian I met did not understand my humor. It was to the point where I asked God if there was something wrong with my sense of humor. I wondered if what I thought was funny wasn’t biblical. My humor wasn’t crude or dirty. I laughed at weird noises, things that I thought were random, and things that I thought were stupid.

The day I knew who my people were, they were belly laughing at goat noises. At that moment I knew that these people were my people. I felt like it was God’s way of confirming it to me. They are my tribe. More than five years later, and they are my best friends. They love Jesus with all their heart and pursue Him passionately. We are launching a church together.
God is a God of choice and He won’t force you to be with the people He has for you. He will give you the option, it’s up to you to choose them.
