People ask me all the time, “How did you overcome your addictive and destructive past?” The answer is simple… maybe too simple for most.
The way I overcame addiction, sexual immorality, and guilt was…I believed the truth of who I am in Christ!
A New Creation
I believed that I was a new creation, with a new heart, new mind, and new spirit! I believed the old me died with Him at the cross, and now I am no longer a slave to sin. I am now a slave to righteousness!
There was no program that could save me, it was the pure gospel! It is this … “We believe one died for all, therefore all have died.” (2 Corinthians 5:14)
When we see people caught in sin and destruction, it is because they do not know who they really are. But they have a new identity in Christ… and this is the good news!
There is no going back, because the old us does not exist anymore! This is righteousness by faith. We must come to Him like children and believe what He says about us!
The Truth of Who You Are in Christ
Below are a few truths that remind you who you are in Christ. Speak these things over your life and know that in Christ, you are a new creation, no matter who you are or have been. Take these with you every day and walk in the freedom He has given you!
I am a child of God. “To all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12, NLT).
I am a joint heir with Christ. “Since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory” (Romans 8:17, NLT).
I am a temple, a dwelling place of God. “Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God?” (1 Corinthians 6:19, NLT).
I am a new creation. “Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” (2 Corinthians 5:17, NLT).
I am a threat to the devil. “I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you” (Luke 10:19, NIV).
I am free from condemnation. “There is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1, NLT).
I can approach God with confidence! “Because of Christ and our faith in him, we can now come boldly and confidently into God’s presence” (Ephesians 3:12, NLT).
I am complete in Christ. “You also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority” (Colossians 2:10, NLT).
I have been redeemed and forgiven of all of my sins. “He has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins” (Colossians 1:13–14, NLT).
I am of the light and no longer belong to the darkness. “You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness” (1 Thessalonians 5:5, NIV).
I am created in the image of God. “God created human beings in his own image” (Genesis 1:27, NLT).
I am chosen. “For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession” (Deut. 7:6, NIV).
I am beautiful and flawless. “You are altogether beautiful, my darling; there is no flaw in you” (Song of Solomon 4:7, NIV).
I have peace. “The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace” (Psalm 29:11, NIV).
I am accepted. “Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God” (Romans 15:7, NIV).
I am a more than a conqueror. “In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us” (Romans 8:37, NIV).
I am confident and fearless. “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline” (2 Timothy 1:7, NLT).
I am treasured. “For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession” (Deuteronomy 7:6, NIV).
I am worthy of His love. “She will walk with me, dressed in white, for she is worthy” (Revelation 3:4, NIV).
I am a delight to God. “For the Lord takes delight in his people” (Psalm 149:4, NIV).
I am secure. “Let the beloved of the Lord rest secure in him, for he shields him all day long, and the one the Lord loves rests between his shoulders” (Deuteronomy 33:12, NIV).
I am loved unconditionally. “Neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:39, NIV).
