July is a month when the word “freedom” seems to echo everywhere—from parades to picnics, fireworks to family gatherings. But as followers of Jesus, we carry a deeper, quieter kind of freedom—one not tied to a date on the calendar or the shifting tides of world events. It’s a kind of freedom that lives inside us. A freedom that cannot be taken. A freedom that Christ Himself came to bring.

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.” Galatians 5:1a (NIV)

What does it really mean to live in that freedom?

For many of us, freedom can feel just out of reach. We may carry invisible weights: past hurts, disappointments, regrets. Sometimes we try to move forward, hoping time will heal what’s broken. But true freedom doesn’t come from forgetting the past—it comes from allowing God to meet us in it.
Jesus came not only to rescue us from sin, but to restore our hearts, renew our minds, and release us from the chains we may not realize are weighing us down. The freedom He offers isn’t surface-level—it’s soul-deep. It touches every part of who we are.

“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32 (NIV)

Living in this kind of freedom means inviting God into the wounded places. It means listening for His voice, learning to trust what He says, and allowing His truth to rewrite the old narratives. It means choosing to forgive, not because the pain didn’t matter, but because we no longer want it to have power over us.
We experience this freedom by renewing our minds with Scripture—not just reading the Bible, but letting the Word transform us. And it means stepping into the authority Christ has given us, not with pride, but with peace. Quiet strength. Confidence rooted in who He is and who He says we are.

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:36 (NIV)

This is the kind of freedom no one can steal. It is not shrouded in fear or shame. It is not bound by past or present circumstances. This is freedom that transforms, heals, and restores.

So, this July, don’t just celebrate the freedom around you. Seek the freedom only Jesus can give. The kind that doesn’t just make you feel better but actually makes you new.

You were not made to carry the weight of old wounds, bitter roots, or silent shame.
You were made to live free. Whole. Unbound.
And in Christ—you can.

Take a few minutes today to reflect on what this kind of freedom means for you:

  • Are there any places in your life where you feel bound or weighed down?
  • What would it look like for you to invite Jesus into those places today?
  • Which truth from Scripture do you need to hold onto right now to walk in greater freedom?
  • Is there someone you need to forgive—not to excuse the pain, but to release its hold on you?
  • How might God be inviting you to step into the freedom He already won for you?
