Have you ever tried to stop doing something you knew was bad for you, and then found yourself falling back into the same unhealthy habit or pattern?  You are not alone. When we know something needs to change, and we try to make that change in our own strength, it can seem impossible. We may feel trapped and powerless. We may even be tempted to just give up.

But here’s some good news: If you have trusted Jesus as your Savior and asked Him to forgive your sin, you have access to incredible power—resurrection power—the power God used to raise Jesus from the dead.

In this crazy, fallen world, we all struggle with different things. But as sons and daughters of the King we have the right, the responsibility, and the authority to walk in freedom.

Yes, we have an enemy. And our enemy has a plan.  But Jesus has another plan.

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” That’s what Jesus said in John 10:10.

Satan often uses things like our habits, addictions, thought patterns, and relationships to pull our focus away from following Christ. Satan wants us to feel unworthy. He wants us to feel defeated. Satan tempts, pressures, and oppresses us. He wants us to feel angry, depressed, hopeless and afraid.

We were not created to live weighed down by this type of pressure and heaviness, but many people live that way because they don’t know how to escape. And severe oppression can make it hard to function normally in life.

As a son or daughter of God your inheritance is freedom! And as you submit your life to God, you get to claim your inheritance. Knowing your authority in Christ allows you to stand firm against the enemy. Using your authority in Christ enables you to access the power to walk in freedom.

Jesus died on the cross so that our sins could be forgiven. And He rose from the dead so we could live in victory. No matter what we have done and no matter what circumstances we face, it is possible for us to experience God’s forgiveness, healing, love, joy, and peace.

The Bible encourages us to declare God’s promises over our lives. Ask the Lord what promises from Scripture you need to declare over your life today. Say the verses out loud, and let the words penetrate your mind, heart, and soul as you claim your rightful inheritance.

Personalizing the verses below will help you get started.

“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” James 4: 7 (NIV)

Example of a personalized declaration: Because I choose to submit myself to God, I resist the devil and he flees from me.

“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Galatians 2:20 (NIV)

“It was for freedom that Christ set us free. Stand firm then, and do not let yourselves be burdened by a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1 (ESV)

“So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.” Galatians 4: 7 (NIV)

“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,  because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you[a] free from the law of sin and death. .” Romans 8:1-2 (NIV)

“You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” 1 John 4: 4 (NIV)

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.” Ephesians 6:10 (NIV)
