We may be fearful of a lot of things in life. For some people, they fear rejection or missing out on social gatherings and feeling out of the loop in their social circles. Some people fear change; like a change in career, location, or even relationship status. And for many of us, we fear loss and the hurt it may bring us in its aftermath.

It’s easy to write off our fears on a surface level and tell ourselves, “That’s just who I am”. But if we keep it that simple, we miss out on the opportunity to get to the root of those fears and stop them before they control our emotions and sometimes even our lives.

The Root

Identifying the root of our fears is not an easy task. It requires self-reflection and ultimately a confrontation of the lies we have believed that have kept us in bondage. These lies will look different for everyone, and the enemy loves to use them to hold us back from walking out in the freedom that the Lord has for us!

James 4:8 tells us that if we come near to God, He will come near to us. So, draw near to Him and spend some time in prayer. Ask Him where you are letting fear control your life and ask Him to help you identify the lie (or lies) that you believe to be true.

Changing our Thoughts and Words

Once you have identified some of the lies that are keeping you in bondage, combat them with the truth! Our thoughts and words hold so much power, and we can change the way we think about ourselves by declaring God’s Truth over our lives.

Find a verse that contradicts a lie that you have been believing and start incorporating that verse into your life every day. You can speak it out loud, memorize it, or even write it on a sticky note and place it on your mirror. The goal is to remind yourself of this verse (and God’s Truth in it) as often as you can so that your heart and mind are focused on the truth!

God’s Promise

You were not designed to live in fear, and the Lord has given you the tools in His word to combat those fears with the truth. In Deuteronomy 31:6, God tells us, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” We can feel confident to invite the Lord into our places of fear because we know that He promises to comfort us and go before us. Speak His Truth over your life daily and walk with Him in the freedom that he desires for you!
