Life moves fast. And with distractions around every corner, it can feel like our brains are moving even faster. But sometimes, when we jump from one thing to the other in life, we leave behind unresolved feelings, conflicts, and emotions.

This is what I like to call “unfinished business.” Often this unfinished business builds up and then surfaces at the worst possible time, forcing you to confront something that was pushed aside months or even years ago.

This is not how God designed us to operate. Not only does He want us to process through these things, but He wants us to do it WITH Him.

He Goes Before Us

Deuteronomy 31:8 tells us, “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” (NIV)

I love the beginning of this verse where it says the Lord “goes before” us. This means that the Lord is actively leading us as we walk through life, no matter the circumstance. So not only is He walking with us, He is before us, guiding us, and staying with us.

So maybe your unfinished business looks like feelings of resentment towards a family member or unprocessed grief after the loss of a loved one. It could even look like feelings of disappointment after not achieving a past goal or after making a poor decision.

If you think about all your unfinished business, it might intimidate you.  But just as the verse in Deuteronomy says, God will NEVER leave you or forsake you. We can challenge ourselves to deal with our unfinished business because even if it might be scary, God is with us every step of the way.

Where Do We Start?

Now that we can confidently tackle some of our unfinished business, where do we start?

Often, the best place to start is to talk to a professional counselor. Having the guidance of a professional will help you safely go back and process all of those left behind feelings in a healthy way.

Talking to a loved one is also another great way to process your unfinished business. Finding someone you trust who will truly listen to you and understand you as you verbally process things left unsettled.

Lastly, talk to your Heavenly Father! Spending time in prayer is critical in the process of healing and resolving whatever your unfinished business may be. Luckily for us, God knows the depths of our hearts and wants us to be in conversation with Him every step of the way.

Resolving Our Unfinished Business

Maybe it’s time to sit down and allow yourself to think about some of your unfinished business. There might be things, big or small, that you need to address to fully move on and feel whole again. Whatever those things are for you, allow your Heavenly Father to be a part of that healing process and know that it is okay to ask for help. Remember that the Lord is there to guide you, go before you, and never leave you as you deal with your unfinished business.
