When life gets hard, it’s easy to push God away. We feel so overwhelmed, and faith can feel like just another responsibility to keep up with. It feels like too much work to spend time with God, so instead we step away.

But listen – these thoughts are not true! You don’t have to achieve a certain level of productivity in your faith. When life is the most difficult and the most overwhelming, turning to God in any way will offer the greatest source of peace you can find. It’s important to be vulnerable with God and honest with yourself about how you’re really doing. Life can be painful, and your pain deserves to be addressed.

Scripture to Respond

Here are ten Bible verses to help you respond in overwhelming times of difficulty and turn towards God.

“O Lord, all my longing is before you; my sighing is not hidden from you.” Psalm 38:9

“Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” Psalm 42:5

“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” Deuteronomy 31:8

“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.” 2 Corinthians 4:16

“Because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.” Romans 8:2

“And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.” 2 Corinthians 5:15

“For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13

“Those who plant in tears will harvest with shouts of joy. They weep as they go to plant their seed, but they sing as they return with the harvest.” Psalm 126:5-6

“To all who mourn in Israel, he will give a crown of beauty for ashes, a joyous blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair. In their righteousness, they will be like great oaks that the Lord has planted for his own glory.” Isaiah 61:3

“And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Revelation 21: 3-4

God is your refuge and your comfort. Don’t be afraid to turn to God and share how you’re really feeling. He is our ultimate healer. We hope these verses serve to encourage you as you lean into God when you need Him most.
