“Home church” for the Nashville Mercy residents is Christ Church Nashville. During their stay at Mercy, Christ Church is where the girls regularly attend Sunday service and go to a class called “Life Notes” hosted by Ken Abraham.

Abraham, a New York Times best-selling author, and his wife Lisa, a former Mercy Multiplied employee, have supported Mercy for 30 years. Two years ago they served as honorary chairs for Mercy’s annual Christmas benefit in Nashville.

“Life Notes” is a favorite weekly activity among the Nashville residents. Along with the residents, the class is made up of older adults and families who are especially attentive to the Mercy girls on their journeys to freedom from life-controlling issues. “They pour a lot into the girls on Sundays and a lot of them attend the girls’ Mercy graduations,” said Mercy staff Elizabeth Burton. “The residents sometimes refer to them as ‘spiritual grandparents,’” Burton said.

Last Sunday, the “Life Notes” group took the residents to the Nashville Sounds baseball game against the Memphis Redbirds. Regardless of the Sounds’ loss and Memphis clinching the American Southern Division championship, the residents thoroughly enjoyed the outing.

“The game was so much fun! The energy at the game was exciting, and it was great to be a part of!” said one resident. “It was awesome getting to see the Sunday school members outside of church!” said another.

In addition to spending this special time with the “Life Notes” group, stadium concessions topped the list of the residents’ game-day favorites. Other highlights included two residents snagging game balls as souvenirs and impromptu dancing and singing in the rain as the music played and the weather turned in the final innings.

“I think events like these are great to teach the girls how to have fun and model to them what healthy fun looks like,” said Burton. “It’s also a great way for residents to bond with each other and unwind from busy and heavy schedules day to day.”

“We had a great time,” reflected one of the Mercy residents. “I loved getting to be a part of it.”
