Go Back to Lives Transformed

Meaghan – 2014 Graduate

MeaghanTGrowing up, I felt neglected. Beginning at age five, I was sexually abused by a close family member for nine years. This person was also physically and emotionally abusive, even after the sexual abuse stopped. A different family member also abused me when I was young; this abusive relationship lasted until I started the Mercy program. I dealt with depression, anxiety and trust issues. I began abusing medications. I would lie to people and make up a fake life. I disguised my relationship with God, always pretending I was okay. I wore many masks to protect myself. For the last few years, I only found comfort sleeping in my room or watching TV by myself. I isolated myself to shut out the pain I was feeling.

I found out about Mercy through a relative who completed the program a few years ago. I applied in an effort to start fresh. I was searching for a healthier way to live my life.

A big turning point for me at Mercy was when I finally realized that the abuse I had suffered was not my fault. I had always blamed myself. Along with dealing with my abusive past, I came to Mercy to be free from depression. It took a while for me to realize that I had a choice in how I could respond to my situation. God has given me hope, strength and a different attitude.

Since I’ve been at Mercy, I’ve learned that I’m not perfect and never will be, and I’m okay with that. I know God loves me and gives me grace where it is needed. I learned how to take off my masks and be honest with people. I’ve learned how to recognize abuse and am confident in my ability to form healthy relationships without fear. I trust in God and go to Him when I need questions answered. I now know I can have so much more with God than just religion.

After Mercy, I plan on getting a full time job. In the spring, I hope to go back to college to finish my degree. I look forward to getting married and having a family in the future.

I am so thankful for Mercy’s donors. I could not even begin to thank them for making this experience possible for me. I have been moved by how willing people are to give to this ministry–it has motivated me to do the same. I’m excited to give back!
